DETAILS

  • 41/2
    hrs Estimate Duration

Immerse yourself in medieval Catalonia during visits to the astonishing 12th-century Poblet Monastery, once the royal pantheon of the Crown of Aragon, and the marvelous walled village of Montblanc. Journey to the fertile Francoli Valley and gaze in awe at the monumental Poblet Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll learn that although the monastery was founded by French Cistercian monks in 1150, the sanctuary’s religious buildings weren’t fortified until the 14th century during the War of Castile. See the imposing crenellated walls, battlements and walkways erected to protect the monastic quarters and the lovely church, within which you’ll discover the Crown of Aragon’s exquisite tombs. Walk in the footsteps of 14th-century knights in Montblanc, an unspoiled medieval village boasting nearly intact walls, a beautiful Romanesque stone bridge, the glorious Church of Santa Maria la Major and the intriguing remains of a Jewish Quarter. Relish time on your own for further exploration or perhaps drop into a traditional Catalan restaurant to sample some pa amb tomàquet, delicious country bread rubbed with tomato, garlic and olive oil sprinkled with sea salt. You’ll delight in the heaven-sent gifts of bountiful Catalonia.
